Will working on weekends really make you more successful?
Today is Saturday, and many people have adopted the rule “weekend is holy…no work during the weekend”. Two schools confront each other here: Some believe you need to work on the weekends to succeed in today’s connected world. Others stress the importance of setting boundaries and disconnecting. Hello, I am Michael Cohen. I am a Coach, a consultant, and a Trusted advisor. My mission is to draw out of my clients a mission so powerful that nothing will stop them. If you watch this live, thanks for giving a thumb up, a little hart or leave a comment below Trying to weigh-in all the views on this topic, I try summarizing here 6 main Trends I have identified. And While I say “working” during the weekend, it’s not necessarily “work” as we always think about it… it’s more working towards your “big goals.”
Trend # 1. “How you spend your time says everything about what you value.”
As a leader, you must have a clear sense of priorities and an ability to say no to things. Key priorities are family and work. For work, at any given time, you should have a list of three things that you are working on that add real value for your customers or team.
Trend # 2. Work-life balance is a myth.
Work-life balance is a myth. You don’t switch on and off between work and life; it all happens simultaneously. You don’t actively pursue working more or less. You work whatever amount of time is needed and take off whatever amount of time is necessary.
Trend # 3. Success requires building relationships around the clock.
When you own a business, you have to make your customers’ needs a priority. There is no such thing as a day off. Not working on the weekend is simply not an option. Being successful requires operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Trend # 4. We shouldn’t differentiate between the week and the weekend.
Differentiating between the week and the weekend is part of the problem. Rather than isolating the week from the weekend, finding a work-life balance is about finding a balance that works for you.
Trend # 5. Boundaries will set you free.
Entrepreneurs can build businesses that either serve or enslave them. It’s easy to become a “human doing”; but setting boundaries, whether it be around weekends, mornings, or evenings, gives you the space to be a human being.
Trend # 6. Wherever you are, be there fully.
Many people think about their family while they’re at work and think about work while they’re with their family. You have to be intentional, plan ahead, and openly communicate in advance to set expectations. Wherever you are, be there fully and ensure that this balance will fulfill you and people around you in the long run. To summarize, I think there is no” one fits all “rule…it depends on many factors such as:
- What is your current family life… are you single, do you have a partner, do you have children…?
- What stage is your business or career?
- Is there any emergency at the current moment…at work or in your personal life?
I think that, as very often, the truth is in the “middle.” I mean, you have to find the right balance that suits you and your personal environment. However, I recommend not to take a single day off for your “big goals.” I mean, if your goal is to train physically more… don’t’ tell yourself: “it’s the weekend. I take a break and start again on Monday”. Maybe you won’t do a full training session, but you will do a “little thing” to keep in mind your BIG goal and imprint it deeply into your subconscious. For example, you could do a 6 min session with planks, sit-ups, and pushups… It won’t jeopardize your weekend and will continue to imprint your mind with this objective. This way, your “big goal” becomes fully part of yourself. So for you, what is your view on that? Do you work on your Big Goal during the weekends, or do you “take some rest”? Please comment below. I am really curious.
